Just 4 miles south of Lowestoft is Kessingland, a small resort with a long and rich history. Both Palaeolithic and Neolithic implements have been unearthed here and the remains of an ancient forest lies buried on the seabed. Kessingland was once rumoured to be the richest village in England, and still contains some impressive examples of architecture.
Today this former fishing village now provides a variety of holiday activities, and plays host to the many holiday visitors each year who stay in the abundant selection of holiday camps, chalet and caravan parks.
Kessingland boasts wonderful stretches of rural beach and in 1998 has again won the Tidy Britain Group's Seaside award for its high standards of cleanliness and water quality.
